Located centrally in Columbia
County on US Highway 16, midway between Columbus
and Portage, is the community of Rio. Little
more than a half-hour from Madison, the village
of Rio, population 938, offers a small-town
atmosphere. Rio, "Camper City" has three near-by
campgrounds for summer outings and groomed
snowmobile trails for winter fun. A variety of
local businesses include, among others, a
grocery store, a bowling alley, Johnson's
Sausage Shop, the Hometown Cafe and Old Dutch
Bistro - a unique European style experience.
Within walking distance of Lincoln Avenue, the
main street, is the Rio Airport which features a
Fly-In Breakfast annually in June which draws
many "small-plane" flying enthusiasts.
The
community has an elementary school and a middle
school/high school. Rio Community Library has
over 16,000 volumes, 1,250 videos, audio-books
and music CDs. The close proximity of the
village to Madison, Portage and the Dells (40
