Full Day Trip

The Rustic Roads System in Wisconsin was created to help preserve what remains of Wisconsin's scenic, lightly traveled country roads.   These routes provide bikers, hikers, and motorists with an opportunity to leisurely travel the scenic countryside. Unique brown and yellow signs mark the routes of all officially designated Rustic Roads.   A small placard beneath the Rustic Roads sign identifies each Rustic Road by its numerical designation within the total statewide system.

Rustic Road 69 (Old Agency House Road)

Travels along the historic Portage Canal. On one side of the road are wetlands that serve as a habitat for sandhill cranes, blue heron, and many other birds. The road leads to the historic Indian Agency House (circa 1832) where it connects with the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. One can also view the remnants of the Old Fort Winnebago Locks. This canal joined the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers, making travel by water possible for the first time from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. Printable Map and Description

Rustic Road 49 (Levee Road)

Travels through Pine Island Wildlife Area and through the Aldo Leopold reserve along the Wisconsin River providing an opportunity to view prairie grasses, wildlife, trees and marsh in their natural setting. Printable Map and Description
