Travels along
the historic Portage Canal. On one side of the
road are wetlands that serve as a habitat for
sandhill cranes, blue heron, and many other
birds.
The
road leads to the historic Indian Agency House
(circa 1832) where it connects with the Ice Age
National Scenic Trail. One can also view the
remnants of the Old Fort Winnebago Locks. This
canal joined the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers, making
travel by water possible for the first time from
the Great Lakes to the Gulf of
Mexico.
